Suggested Sips to Accompany Sorghum!

You’ve just prepared a delicious Spring Sorghum Salad with Radish and Roasted Asparagus by Erin Alderson for dinner, and you’re ready to unwind with an accompanying glass of wine. Hmm…which bottle to uncork? If you’re like most, you know your wine-pairing basics – lean toward pairing red, full-bodied wines with meats and refreshing, crisp white wines with seafood.

But beyond that, how deep is your knowledge of food and wine pairings? What about pairing wine and your favorite grain dishes? We’ve put together a list of wines that would accompany some of our favorite sorghum entrees AND sorghum desserts nicely – just in time for warm weather, patio gatherings and picnics at the park!

Sorghum and Chicken

A zinfandel, tasting of berries, plums and pepper, is a great pick for grilled chicken entrees and Mexican-inspired dishes. We suggest pairing this jammy wine with our Sorghum Chicken Fiesta recipe or Wondergrain Stir-Fry recipe (add grilled chicken)!

Sorghum and Lean Red Meat

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Bordeaux complement lean red meats such as lamb, round roast and sirloin. Reach for a tannin-rich cab when feasting on this Smoked Lamb with Sorghum Barbecue Sauce by Chef Bobby Flay.

Sorghum and Seafood

Try a crisp chardonnay with your Lime Fish over Sorghum Pilaf from Nu Life Market or with this tasty Sorghum Arugula Salad with Grilled Shrimp by Triad to Wellness. Chardonnays typically pair well with fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel and herring, rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Pair a Pinot Grigio with a lighter fish dish or one cooked in a light sauce atop a side of sorghum.

Sorghum Salads and Other Vegetarian Entrées

A spicy Syrah complements spicy dishes like this Roasted Asparagus with Harissa-Spiced Sorghum by Sharon Palmer. Harissa’s kick comes from its blend of red pepper, cumin, coriander, paprika, garlic and caraway. Sauvignon Blanc and Vinho Verde pair nicely with tangy foods such as our Citrus Salad with Popped Sorghum. We also suggest this tasty Three-Grain Grilled Vegetable and Feta Salad from Erin Alderson, containing red peppers and sweet corn, paired with a chilled Sauv Blanc. Perfect for a Spring or Summer picnic!

Sorghum Desserts

Semi-sweet sparkling wines such as Moscato d'Asti bring the fruit forward in desserts such as our classic Sorghum Peach Skillet Cake. Craving chocolate instead? End your meal with a Wondergrain Fudgy Chocolate Gluten Free Brownie while sipping on a Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir or Port. Cheers!
