Sorghum and the Top 2018 Food Trends

In 2016, zucchini pasta, miniature foods and salads served in mason jars were all the rage. In 2017, attention turned to kale, the Instant Pot and superfoods. As we turn the page into 2018, Pinterest has released its predictions for the Top 100 trends for the new year. Both Pinterest and Buzzfeed have also taken the time to highlight what they think might specifically be trendy in the culinary world. We wanted to share various ways you might be able to integrate sorghum into some of these fun trends.

1. Using an Air Fryer

While there are a lot of different veggies and foods you can fry using sorghum flour, this recipe for Sweet and Spicy Boneless Buffalo Wings from Nu Life Market would be delicious made in this new kitchen gadget.

2. Healthy Pureed Soups

Pureed soups make for a tasty addition to a meal and are quite easy to make. Try your hand at making this Moroccan-Spiced Carrot and Sorghum Soup from the Kitchn.

3. Celebrating North African Spices

While the Middle East and North Africa are two different regions, they do both share some similarities in spice profiles. Our Za’atar Chicken Thighs with Sweet Potatoes, Kale and Sorghum created by Katie Cavuto has some of the same warm curry flavors that are signature to North African cuisine.

4. Health Snack Food Makeover

Popped sorghum is already a great option for an easy, healthy snack. It can easily be made at home using whole grain sorghum or bought in grocery stores or online. You can also use popped sorghum in this Triple Sorghum Granola recipe for a flavorful snack.

5. Popularity of Mocktails

Both sources are predicting that mocktails will become super trendy this year. Sorghum syrup is a great option for a sweetener for many of these drinks. This Horchata recipe from Hugo’s Restaurant uses ground whole grain sorghum to add a nutty flavor and would be a great mocktail to serve a crowd!
