It’s the perfect time of year to pack a picnic for a day at the park or zoo or even just set up a meal al fresco on your back porch. We’ve gathered some menu ideas you can integrate into your perfect picnic.

Snacks and Finger Foods

Simple Sorghum Deviled Eggs - Deviled eggs are a picnic favorite and we’ve added a fun sorghum twist. Whole grain sorghum adds a fantastic texture to each bite. These tasty deviled eggs are also perfect for customization with your favorite toppings - French- fried onions, Sriracha or keep it classic with a sprinkling of paprika.

Pearled Sorghum Hummus - This dish is easy to prepare ahead of time and will stay fresh on- the-go. The recipe is a twist on a traditional chickpea hummus but still has those classic flavors including peanut, lemon and garlic. Pack an assortment of your favorite veggie sticks for fresh, crunchy dipping options.

Artisan Cheese Crackers - These homemade bite-sized crackers will satisfy any salty craving. Get creative and add fun toppings like lunch meat, cheese slices or veggies to give these crackers a new dimension.

Side Dishes

Watermelon Arugula Salad - Watermelon is a picnic tradition. This salad is filled with bright, delicious flavors! Transport the salad mixture and dressing in separate containers in your picnic basket to keep all the ingredients crispy and fresh until you are ready to enjoy.

Kale and Wondergrain Sorghum Salad - This delightful salad is sure to become a new picnic favorite. The fresh flavors of kale, peppers and onions are complemented by the nutty flavor of whole grain sorghum and a tangy, subtly sweet dressing over top. Best of all, the flavors enhance over time as the ingredients absorb the dressing.

Asian, Chicken, Zoodle and Sorghum Mason Jar Salad - Mason jar salads are an excellent picnic basket addition. Simply layer all the ingredients of this Asian-inspired salad in a jar and seal with the lid for easy portability. When you are ready to enjoy, add the dressing and shake to combine!

Desserts

Apple Spice Bars - These individual snack bars are reminiscent of homemade apple pie but with less cleanup. One of these would be a perfect sweet end to a delightful picnic. Top with a bit of whipped cream for a true apple pie experience.

Oatmeal Coconut-Cardamom Cookies with White Chocolate Chips - Cookies are the ultimate easy-transport dessert. These cookies contain bright summer flavors like coconut and orange that make them perfect for a spring or summer meal.

Gluten-Free Sorghum Brownies - A simple brownie recipe is great way for even kids to get involved in preparing for a special picnic. These brownies from Serious Eats also have the added benefit of being gluten-free for families with special dietary needs. A basic brownie recipe can also be customized to feature your favorite mix-ins such as chocolate chips, chocolate candies or other chocolate goodies.
