Making healthy meals a priority can be difficult on a busy schedule. Oftentimes, fast-food drive throughs or take-out pizza can be easier than spending extra time planning weekly menus, going to the grocery store and preparing meals every day. With the right ingredients, planning and kitchen tools, it is possible to enjoy home-cooked meals that are not only healthy but also convenient!

When it comes to selecting ingredients for a convenient menu, whole grains, like sorghum, are our go-to ingredient because they are both healthy and easy to incorporate into a busy lifestyle. September just so happens to be Whole Grains Month, a perfect time to celebrate all the benefits of consuming whole grains. Sorghum is our favorite whole grain and for good reason! Sorghum is a nutritious whole grain that is naturally gluten free as well as an excellent source of fiber and a good source of protein. Whole grain sorghum is also incredibly versatile and can be used in both traditional and out-of-the-box recipes.

Planning a menu seems like it could be time-consuming but can actually save you a lot of time. Start by finding recipes on Pinterest or another favorite recipe site that are easy to make, can be meal prepped and/or be repurposed into different meals throughout the week – think cook once, eat 2-3 times. Don’t have a lot of time to go to the grocery store? Use your local grocery store’s curbside pick-up service. Simply put your grocery list together, find the items on your grocery store’s website and schedule a pick-up time.

Kitchen tools can also be incredibly useful in saving time in the kitchen. Whole grains, including sorghum, can be conveniently prepared in a pressure cooker or slow cooker. Use a pressure cooker to reduce whole grain sorghum cooking time to just 20 minutes compared to 45-60 minutes using traditional stovetop cooking methods. Using a slow cooker to cook sorghum also provides the convenience of preparing home-cooked meals even when you are busy. All you have to do is prep your dish, set the slow cooker and walk away.
